Pubs in London Site Map

Here is a good example in Poplar. The Anchor & Hope -

Information comes from public census, Trade Directories and [more importantly] Petty Sessions Courts  Victuallers records, and is mostly historical being up to two hundred years previous. Included too, are many modern and classical images of these public houses; plus personal family history stories. There are  over 5,500+ London public houses & taverns, here so far, and also includes many beer houses (the early off licences). East London, Essex, City of London Pubs. Enjoy.

Well, there is this great looking Pub, surrounded by more modern architecture. It looks to be an important landmark in describing the area, and there abouts; but ...........

This is a the Albion Hotel in Albion Road, Stoke Newington, with Williams Brothers clearly stated above the entrance. Can you confirm that this is true, and when the picture is from?  The Albion Hotel.

This is a the Albion Hotel in Albion Road, Stoke Newington, with Williams Brothers clearly stated above the entrance. The Pub shows as being at 2 Clissold Road in many directories, and this is the same place. Number 2  Clissold Road crosses at 137 Albion Road,

What's new by the 8th July 2007

A lot of changes have occurred to ALL sites. Too numerous to mention. I watched the Planet Earth concert tonight, and immediately signed up for a new site.

Nasty Globe . com

This will take a few days to get some content, but it will be 'The site against modern capitalism', you know, the scumbags like Tesco, for example.

What's new by the 29th March 2007

I have integrated the Essex Pubs site into the London Pubs site; and also another site called pubsinlondon.net has also moved web providers to this site, too. A couple of new sites have also started - particularly the History of Stratford site [aka gamesforlondon].

When I get time, I also have a new site to start up, relating to Hornchurch & Romford - this is NOT to be clash with the excellent 'Romford - Now & Then' ; so this site may take a little longer than usual.

A lot of pictures, have also been added from usual sources, particularly Colleen & Stephen Harris.

What's new by the 10th February 2007

The usual miscellaneous updates have occurred, site wide. On the 15th February 2007, the best Essex Pub site is changing domains for ever. It will retain its name http://essexpub.net - but has been added to the http://londonpublichouse.com  site - plus all pages have been updated to the new cleaner format.

All updating of the Pubs in London, Essex, Kent, Surrey & Middlesex are now initially taking place at http://londonpublichouse.com ; and I will eventually drop the http://pubsinlondon.net  site or transfer the domain name.

Make Poverty History  has reappeared, and roots gen is getting a facelift as http://wheninlondon.co.uk - this will be a good site when I have sufficient time to work on it.

Like an idiot, I am now moving Deptford back from Surrey to Kent / London - and I thought my geography was pretty good! Updating on Deptford, Surrey  [I mean Deptford, Kent] , continues as ever.

Massive updates have occurred on all sites, enjoy.

1st April - not an Aprils fool joke

Oh, and see the new Stratford & West Ham site

13th january  2007

Absolutely loads of new updates have occurred - I have spread it amongst updating the London site, and adding new UK information, particularly in Kent and Sussex. In Sussex, there is a whole Trade directory listing now - in 1899; plus particular emphasis on Brighton. Kent has had an update on 1882, plus in London, I have just added St Anns Blackfriars plus a whole host more.  Stephen Harris has supplied me with about 20 to 30 good quality photographs every week, and therefore the images are increasing - plus all those that are being received from Colleen. Matt Martin is regularly updating me with pictures for Deptford and surrounding areas, too. Thanks to all, it is very much appreciated.

 the 18th December 2006

Well, a large amount of Camberwell has been added tonight, so far about 25%, but lots more to follow over the next few days.

 the 2nd December 2006

Lots of updates and changes have occurred over the last five weeks, most notable is the complete change in style. I run the same material on several sites, but they often break, I discovered a change from Frontpage to css stylesheets, and included copy using .shtml pages was much better.

Back to Pub changes, I have added about 40% of Lambeth now, this is taking some time, as many parts are not listed in London, but the suburban directories. Deptford has been moved back into Surrey from Kent, I was getting it confused with Dartford! I am now starting on Pubs in the UK, firstly in the local areas, particularly Kent, Suffolk & Herts. The London updates have taken most time, though, and please let me know if any links are not working properly.

See London site at http://londonpublichouse.com/ http://londonpublichouse.com/ which are both very similar. I tend to update on the first site and then copy changes across every few days. I will add other detail as I think of it, thanks to everyone who is supplying me with additional material, particularly photographs.

 by 27th October 2006

Well, I have started adding Lambeth, just the start of a very large area, and much of Suffolk has been added too - and I am making updates to the London Pubs all the time. I have to say, this is incredibly tiring, and I may need to take a break soon. Please support the sites, by visiting the sponsors. I definitely recommend Lunarpages as the best, cheap hosting solution, if you need your own web site - see advert above. The support is excellent.

23rd October

Well, I have been busy for the last week or so, but not with London! I still need to add Lambeth, but this can wait. As mentioned previously, I have started two All UK pub sites. The initial additions have been for Kent, Hertfordshire, and Suffolk.

As my ancestors came from Suffolk, this wins, and considerable updates are occurring, which include the listings for Suffolk in 1869, 1900 and 1891. I am also adding 1839 Pigots and 1839 Robinsons directory info, census data will come a little later.

see http://ukpubhistory.com  & http://pubsinUK.com

Google Adsense continues to pay out about a £1 a day, which covers costs of the sites, just; but I am now trying out the Ask.com affiliate program. This is better than many of the other affiliate programs with cj and dgm which are a complete waste of time!

15th October 2006

Well, I have yet another UK Public house site based on History - named relevantly -

http://ukpubhistory.com -

I haven't added much to this site so far, except for a  couple of good Suffolk Trade directories , whilst I continue with Kent additions at  http://pubsinUK.com ; and also try to finish off Lambeth for 1881 and about - this file is now about 15,000 lines, so should be an interesting exercise creating all the web pages - it is a big area!  I have just finished a first run through of Greenwich, about 120 Pubs, Beer Houses & Hotels.

Oh, and I have started a new BLOG, but I generally delete these after a few weeks to remove ALL offending material posted by ME - maybe this one will last a bit longer.

3rd October

Well, lots to report - firstly, there is now an UK site running, albeit slowly! Also, many photographs have been added to the East End by Stephen Harris, thanks Stephen.

I am working on Lambeth, Greenwich, Suffolk and Kent at present. Continuously adding new details for Pubs when people supply some interesting data etc etc

The new UK Pubs site is at http://pubsinUK.com , you cannot view all of the new material I am adding, as links are not set up correctly, but it is building quickly - Suffolk & Kent are being worked on first.

The Essex site is still being updated, occasionally - see http://essexpub.net

All details for the London site generally get added to http://londonpublichouse.com first, and then eventually get copied to http://pubsgen.com as and when. This is the same site as http://londonpublichouse.com - just for your interest.

 23rd September

Well, I have dropped a site, sort of. I have added viseastlondon.net together on the same site - this site.

New Additions to the London Pubs sites are the 1891 Beer Retailers, about 1400 of them. I am working heavily from the 1891 Publicans listing for Pubs in London, but have not yet found the time to do any transcriptions. If you want to help, please let me know via any of my email addresses.

I also now have a new web address http://pubsgen.com which points at http://londonpublichouse.com - I do all my updates on http://londonpublichouse.com and copy these across every week or so.

7th September

A considerable update has occurred for Kensington, This includes a massive area of London, including Brompton, Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill,  Kensal Town, parts of Fulham Road etc - about 190 London Pubs in total.

Also, a keen photographer has supplied me with around 75 photographs of the Bethnal Green, Whitechapel and Mile End areas, and more - these have all been added. As I add new entries for an individual Pub or area, I also ensure that all relevant data for that Pub is also updated. A time line for Hanbury Street is complete, but awaiting update to the site. Plus lots of other updates etc - total for site over 5800 Public Houses, Hotels and Beer Houses.

20th August

Lots of updates have occurred in the last two weeks - e.g. the addition of complete listings of Whitechapel High Street, Whitechapel road, Brick lane, Spitalfields etc. - these are timelines for a hundred year period between about 1841 and 1944 and include residents, professions and links to the relevant Pubs. This is very useful to me, as working with nearly 6,000 different Pubs, it allows me to concentrate on one area at a time and ensure that I have not missed these Pubs in London, or their relevant details.

Also added are Charterhouse, St Brides and probably other London parishes; plus continual updates on everywhere. Another tranche of the  transcription of 1839 London Pigots directory has also just been added.

I am also moving the address http://londonpublichouse.com back to the provider which lists http://essexpub.com which is just a replication of the site - I do this to protect the site/s from downtime and to ensure that I always have a good site running. I lost a site through the incompetence of ipowerweb.com [a complete monkey organisation]- and this will never happen again!

I am now using lunarpages.com and United Hosting - both good.

 6th August

Well, I have updated a lot of areas especially regarding beer retailers in London, e.g. adding the 1896 beer Retailers for most of London. Apart from a short holiday, I have been as active as usual. I thought I would mention work that has been done in the past, that is not obviously noticed. This includes emuneration of parts of the Hackney 1871 census and a 200 year span on Poplar high Street - I mention this as I am just starting on Brick Lane [Spitalfields], and this will be even better.

Watch this space for a complete history of Brick Lane, particularly related to Pubs. A lot of people cash in on this area because of Jack the Ripper - I just print valid information without the poetic license.

Don't forget, I am happy to add information to a Pub if you can offer something in return, especially pictures, but anything will do.

 17th July

St Pancras has been fully completed - with over 370 London Pubs, Beer Houses etc. - this area includes Camden Town and Kentish Town.

Bermondsey now complete - around 160 Pubs and Beer Houses in total. Plus another 78 from Rotherhithe just completed, although all pages are continually being updated.

3rd July 2006

Bermondsey has just been started on, and this should be on the site in the next few weeks.

And usual I have been busy, adding the 1839 Pigots Directory, the letters A - F so far. I complained to google for not receiving any links on the London Pubs site, and for this reason I have removed the entire Essex Pub site from roots gen - I left it here as Google image search could not find them otherwise - you can view them all at essexpub.net anyway. This is still missing over a month later - the search engines do keep a rendering of pages, but not images - their loss.

Freefind upgraded my free search engine account, yet again, good guys - try them out, they are brilliant.

25th June 2005

A big, important area St Pancras is the latest to be added, which includes Camden Town, Regents Park, Kings Cross, Euston Road, Tottenham Cross Road, Grays Inn Road etc. There are now over 5000 London Pubs on the site - cool.

Also, not entirely related to pubs is the Olympic Zone Walk pages, these are maps of the new Olympics area from 50, 100, 150 years ago; and with links back to the Pubs that existed in that time [and a lot more too], eventually, These are updated as I find time.

I went for a walk around the new Olympic zone area, and some pictures are already available - I was particularly impressed with finding the original Abbey Mills pumping station still complete -  a fantastic find.

My observations are:

I believe who ever chose this area for the 2012 Olympics deserves a gold medal already; the area is absolutely perfect. The games are six years away, but I am already excited about the choice of venue.

29th May 2005

I have been through the 1896 London suburban directory (North) to add hosts of new publicans and victuallers; and the entire 1934 Directory for Beer Retailers / Publicans. Plus,  additions include Fulham in Middlesex, etc.;  I am trying an  UK web provider, rather than an US web provider. A good deal of the Make Poverty History campaign has also been added, as has the Visit East London site. The interesting thing is how long it takes before my Freefind search engine asks for a payment. They offer an incredible FREE service.

18th May

The entire Newington, Surrey has been added - starting with 1880's entries. This includes about 190 new London Pubs and Beer Houses; and includes Walworth and Kennington.

16th May

New additions are the 1910 Beer Retailers, from a London Post Office Directory - all 1300 of them.

 9th May 2006

I have decided to take a break. Rather than add new exciting content, I will concentrate on making the site/s more visible. There are nearly 5000 pages on this site, and a few thousand more on my other sites. This is nothing spectacular; but I should be in a position to ......... (more tomorrow, or is this today - perhaps I am  watching too much Dr Who - BBC1 UK)

 8th May 2005

I have finished transcribing the entire Newington area for 1881, and along the way discovered that I had missed several areas of Southwark. There are about 50 London Pubs added now at St OlaveSt Thomas and St John Horsleydown  Next on the list [considerably more London Pubs, and ready to be added], will be Newington, in Surrey.

I did resurrect a copy of the Essex Pubs site at roots gen,com so that google image searches would work again.   I messed up the web links on the Essex site, but these are getting fixed slowly.

6th May 2006

Considerable additions and updates to the Aldersgate and Covent Garden areas, particularly earlier census entries have been added.

27th April 2006

Latest additions are the whole of Southwark, this area is broken into three parishes, i.e. St Saviours, Christchurch and the largest is St George Martyr - in total over 200 London Public Houses. The usual updates and additional pictures and other peoples research is continually added.

22nd April, 2006 ?

Additions are St George, Bloomsbury, considerable attention to Hackney in 1871; including enumerators reports. Plus, the London rootsweb list have been offering lots of new London Pubs information, pictures etc; plus updates for Mile End. Plus just added are about 100+ London Pubs and Beer Houses for Southwark, as a start for this area. This includes Southwark Christchurch & St Saviour

 8th April, 2006

Too much to mention, but all areas have considerable new material, and there are well over 4000 Pubs and Beer Sellers, Taverns etc. I am still concentrating on Middlesex, and City of London; but other areas are still being added. Hackney 1851 census was transcribed, but this will take some time to add correctly because of the considerable changes in Hackney, or lack of road numbering in the census. There are currently 235 Hackney Pubs to choose from.

2nd April, 2006

Holborn [St Andrew] has been heavily updated with a considerable number of Victuallers Records from the Petty Sessions court records from the London Metropolitan Archives - they are all added now for period 1873 - 1882. I have visited this place twice, now, and it is a fantastic place - staff are really helpful - and there is lots to research.

Westminster is now complete for the 1881 census, as St Margaret , Westminster has finally been added.

Clerkenwell has been heavily updated, but there is a lot more to add, as is St Giles, where I have lots of Petty Session Victuallers records to add. etc etc.

March 29th, 2006

New today is the addition of up to fifty photographs of the Bromley / Bow area kindly supplied by Philip Mernick. he is heavily involved in the Tower Hamlets History site amongst other sites.

Also, after a couple of visits to the London Metropolitan archive ( LMA ), a lot of Petty Sessions Victuallers records have been added to the Holborn & Clerkenwell areas  of London. This is an ongoing process, but this should prove of interest to some.

Finally, this site has resurrected a copy of the Essex Pubs site, just to allow the Google images to work, from the search engine. The only site where Essex Pubs will continue to be updated is at http://essexpub.net - but there are copies all over the place! Plus Roman Road in 1944 is being transcribed, to make some sense of the Road numbering changes over the previous ten years. Lots more to come.

March 6th

New today are Marylebone, Chelsea, St George martyr, Westminster -St John & St Margaret. the last are being added as this update occurs. There are well over 4,000 London Public Houses in the index now. Quitea lot of the 1839 Pigots directory has been added, as have Victuallers records for Holborn etc. or 1872 -1882.

I am working on Chelsea, Marylebone, St George Hanover Square &  Westminster St John etc...  - you might see St George pages added to the google search, but the other areas are transcribed, and just not added so far. Be patient, I only have one pair of hands. I reckon the site must be getting close to 3,500 Pubs now.

Well, the London Public House site now has about 3,000 Public Houses added, most are only boring 1881 census, but 1882 Trade Directory info is added first, to give the Pubs addresses their name. All of East London has an entry, so we are now adding City of London Public Houses. Pictures are an absolute nightmare to find - most are so heavily copyrighted, I cannot use them. Please help me out here.

I came across an excellent site @ http://www.professorharbottle.co.uk/pub/index.html whom not only lists quite a few good pubs, but also spends more time on each, visiting and trying their wares, I have permission to use pictures, as long as copyright rules are followed, and this site is GREAT, it adds so much depth to boring census info - WELL DONE.

 3rd March

Well, St Marylebone is soon to be added; and Chelsea is next. A lot of additions happen without even a mention. I think most of the City of London is now on the site. Addenda: Westminster is restricted to St James parish only, and still needs addition of St John & St Margaret parishes ( these look huge).
