East London, Essex, & the City of London.

This site is about the History of East London & Essex . Much of the early history of Essex is now entwined into that of the East of London - and some areas are still in Essex, but feel more a part of London. Share in my Olympic Zone Walk introductions - they walk the area in (2006) and more importantly, you can visit the area of Stratford / Hackney in 1900 and also in 1950 too - map of the area in that time has links to the various landmarks in that time. There is now a site strictly aimed at the history of Stratford and the parish of West Ham. Enjoy, and please feel free to contribute.

The site for History, Genealogy, census, comment, news updates, travel advice, local knowledge, flights, minicab, taxis,  trains, hotels, where to stay - that International event , local history, images of London, photographs, postcards, webcams, sudoku games, blog, historical events etc. - see  Best tips & Free Travel advice  in London - I will accentuate these details in the pages of of when in London.

The Olympic events are happening in London, in 2012, this will  see the regeneration of a 500 acre plot in the East End of London being transformed into a top class stadium and village, and afterwards into new homes, hotels and businesses. Stratford and Hackney, in the east end of London will receive massive benefits in creation of this 'state of the art' sporting facility. :Let's look at how this area existed in earlier days. Here are a verifiable fantastic selection of images from London, over the last 100 years - enjoy. None of the London pictures belong to this site,  they are all being broadcast with the permission of Francis Frith, Here is a stunning example, lots more London images are here.

London, London Bridge 1890,

There will be 17,320 beds in the Olympic Village, allowing sporting competitors to walk to the stadium from their hotel. Each apartment will have internet access, TV and a private courtyard. These will all be turned into 3,600 apartments / homes, after the event - with a significant number of these homes affordable to those on lower incomes. It has been promised that 50% of the homes will be available as affordable housing for the local community, and service sector, e.g. teachers, health service etc. Let us see if this promise is kept! Compare this with the History of essex in 1841, and East London.

Incidentally, deprivation in Hackney is well evidenced. Every single ward in the borough is within the 10% most deprived in the country. This regeneration is essential, including the aspiration of transport improvements, new jobs and economic growth in the area. But see the NEWS about the losers too, i.e. relocation of successful business.

I am more interested in genealogy, although largely in Essex; the East of London Family History site has some fantastic resources ( here, for example) and well worth a visit, and perhaps a membership, too.

Or on the web is a fantastic online game of sudoku

London is the greatest place to visit, in the earth - come and see, don't just take my word for it.  This site will give you some guidance.
